iPortable - 10.6.2

PROTOCOL-X has made a new 10.6.2 bootable distro! The only thing you need is working Leopard/Snow Leopard system and an 8GB USB-Stick. So if you have a spare USB stick or external hard drive you can boot Snow Kitty on almost everything! (You have to be careful though, not every PC supports OSX! But with core 2 duo so popular you have a really good chances! )

Installation process is very simple. Download the iso (2.6GB) and follow the instructions in manual. After downloading the iso, installation on the stick takes only 5min (depending on your USB-Drive write speed).

There is a small problem with this distro though! It has DARWIN BOOTLOADER, so it is 'impossible' to boot it on a PC that doesn't have a proper bootloader: like EMPIRE EFI or Chameleon. The workaround for this issue is to use a osx compatible bootloader or to install chameleon on the drive (not tested - but shouldn't be a problem)

Booting procedure on white-box PC:

1. EmpireEFI or tonymacx86 (customized Chameleon) burned on a CD.
2. Choose iPortable at Chameleon Boot!
3. Enjoy Snow Leopard!

Troubleshooting:

There is a long list in manual regarding i3, i5 and i7 CPUs, they need the busratio set at boot and cpus=1 to boot properly. Just read the manual and in case of problems you can't overcome ask in the forums!

Chameleon RC3 - new bootloader

Release Candidate 3 seems to me to be the last before the "Golden Master". The new support for Snow Leopard is working (even with RC1 and RC2 with the right boot file), everything else seems to work as it should. RC3 has a small flaw though, you can get the binaries at the moment. There is no installer for it, and no proper instructions too. It's definitely a "download", but installing would be risky if you don't exactly know what you are doing. In RC3 you will find support for Leopard and Snow Leopard. In your Extra folder you'll find three new: 10.5 and 10.6 and Common, for extensions for leopard and snow leopard and common kexts.

New bootloader - xpc 0.50 (early beta)

Chameleon just went from RC2 to RC3 to help people adopt snow leopard. Netkas updated PC-EFI 10.3 for more Snow Leopard goodness... But there is new player on the scene: XPC bootloader. You can find screenshots on Taruga's blog. I have to say, it doesn't looks better than Chameleon, apparently it has better groundwork though. People report that the booting process is more mac alike. There is no resolution switching and the transition from loading screen to desktop is very smooth - just like in real macs.

iGenius - next iPortable

>>>Update<<< NEW LION INSTALL GUIDE:

>>>Update<<< Chameleon 2.0 for Lion here:

ProtocolX made another USB bootable rescue/backup/restore distro. iGenius is based on 10.5.6 and is works for Hackintoshes as well for original Macs. Users report that this version is a way faster than iPortable. ProtocolX points out that SanDisk Crusier isn't the best choice for iGenius because of low throughput. Installation process and size after install is the same as for iPortable, only this time you have lots of rescue/restore tools included. So if you have 8GB of free space on your USB-stick, don't hesitate to install it, because you never know when you gonna need it. Here is some more info on included tools:

In case you have problems booting of USB-Stick on your Hackintosh make sure your partition map scheme is Master Boot Record (MBR). If this doesn't help try installing Chameleon bootloader.

10.5.7 update - more snapiness

So the new update has landed. I can say the update is safe for hacks, only thing you have to worry about are some kexts... If you follow netkas guide for this update you will have no problems at all.

Short guide from netkas: update guide
Start as super user (sudo...)
while sleep update 1 ; do rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext ; done
Install and reboot

Old issue:
If you have problem mounting .dmg then you have to switch your seatbelt.kext to one matching your kernel version. There are planty of places where you can find those kexts for 9.5 and 9.6 kernels.
The system seems to be a lot snappier! Safari is of the charts in performance (still memory hungry but the performance is amazing...) Definitely recommended to all! In case you experience some problems with Radeon 4850 or 4830 try netkas workaround.

Using Apple Remote on Hackintosh

>>>Update<<< NEW LION INSTALL GUIDE:

>>>Update<<< Chameleon 2.0 for Lion here:

After hours spent on fine tuning and getting everything to work just like on a real Mac (or even better), many of us started to miss some of Windows functionality and compatibility. I'm not talking about games and other applications but about hardware. You can't just go to the computer store and grab a DVB-T stick and be sure it will be recognized on your hackintosh. Choosing new hardware involves hours spend on forums asking questions, reading reviews to find the 100% compatible piece of hardware - PC hardware. The ultimate goal having a hackintosh is to get it as close as possible to the real thing without spending thousand of dollars on it.

iSight and Apple Remote are included with many apple computers, Apple Remote is the toughest to get to work properly.

iSight - use this plugin and hope your webcam is supported: macam3.4mb
(After adding macam.component your webcam should work just like iSight)

Apple Remote: needs IR receiver, the cheapest solution is Windows MCE (eHome) 2005 Receiver, you can read more on compatibility here:
- Remote Buddy - 19.99
- Twisted Melon - $15.95

As you see you will have to use some software to get it to work but it works very well.

Leo4all is... dead!

It is very sad but true. Bhast2 decided to stop Leo4all development and started work on Snow Leopard. Updated Leo4All with new voodoo kernel and brand new chameleon boot loader was announced by Bhast2 few months ago. It was even planned to include "boot from DVD" function. Many of us waited for for it and after new chameleon got official we got that feeling Leo4all will be released any time. Now everything is clear and we are stuck with 10.5.4 system...

Chameleon 2.0 install guide

>>>Update<<< NEW LION INSTALL GUIDE:

>>>Update<<< Chameleon 2.0 for Lion here:

/Update
30/3/
Finally!!! More news follow! Download here: Chameleon

//Update
After weeks of waiting the public release candidate is out. I have to say they did a very good work on Chameleon! GUI looks great and I can't wait to customize it for my needs. But first things first: how do I install it on my hackintosh? The readme file doesn't say much to novice osx86 user, so if you don't feel comfortable with using Terminal, better wait for the final version and better install instructions.

Install:
1. Make sure you have EFI installed. It should be in /Volumes/EFI {Menu>Go>Go to Folder>/Volumes/EFI}
2. Open Disk Utility and find your startup disk and choose information, you will need the Disk ID

Radme says:

example installation is on /dev/disk0s2
-Install boot0 to the MBR:
sudo fdisk -f boot0 -u -y /dev/rdisk0
-Install boot1h to the partition's bootsector:
sudo dd if=boot1h of=/dev/rdisk0s2
-Install boot to the partition's root directory:
sudo cp boot / {don't have to cd anything}

That isn't a lot for an installation guide, and you have some folders like Extra and i368 you don't know what to do with. Let's start!

To run commands found in readme you have to cd the i386 folder. {Terminal> cd /drag and drop the i386 folder}

Before you run radme commands you still have a folder called Extra where all the graphics are in. This must be moved to /Volumes/EFI together with smbios.plist
You can do that in Terminal with cd /drag and drop the Extra folder and run cp -R smbios.plist Themes /Volumes/EFI/Extra {Check first if Extra folder already exists, when not create one}

If you have modified com.appple.Boot.plist you will have to copy it to /Volumes/EFI {If you played with osx86tools, or added your graphics or audio card to EFI you have to do this}

Leo4all release date...

We all waited for the newest release of leo4all. There are many reasons why leo4all developers didn't managed to release it on time. Appart from bhast2 personal reasons there are other problems which make the release of version 6 impractical.

The new XNU voodoo 9.6 kernel - so that everything stays compatible, we need a new kernel for 10.5.6. XNU dev's are currently busy with other projects like new Chameleon bootloader, which delays the next 9.6 kernel.

Chameleon bootloader - new features like GUI, simplified dual boot methods, supposedly more compatible.

10.5.6 - this update should fix some security issues and the overall stability of OSX. Many users reported the opposite. Without the new kernel, the whole system can be unstable. People will have to replace .kexts to older 10.5.5 versions, to get their hardware to work. Not mounting drives, lost of sleep/hibernation functionality, USB not working are the most common problems. Many users decided to downgrade.
